John Wick

I watched all three of the John Wick movies and I liked them.  No, the word is not like; I LOVE them.  These are GREAT movies and it is very seldom that the follow-up to a good movie is also good.  The three John Wick movies are all good and amazing.

The story starts out very simple (as all good stories usually do).  John Wick is putting petrol in his car, a 1969 Ford Mustang, when a young man comes over and admires the car.  He offers to buy the car, which Wick of course refuses.

That night the young man and his friends break into Wick’s house.  They assault Wick, kill his puppy and steal the Mustang.

And this is where the whole franchise starts.  Throughout the whole franchise you will hear people say: They stole Wick’s car and they killed his dog.

When this young man – who happens to be Iosef the son of Viggo Tarasov, one of the most influential gangsters in the city – tries to sell the car – he finds out the workshop owner will not help him.  The owner even assaults Iosef for bringing the car to his establishment.  When Viggo phones him later on to enquire why he hit his son, the owner tells him:  Because he stole John Wick’s car and killed his dog.

From the look on his face, it is clear that Viggo immediately understand the implications of this.  When Viggo parleys with his son later on, we find out that John Wick is one of the top assassins in the world.  He even killed three men in a bar with only a pencil.  Viggo tells his son that their whole organization was built on the foundation that John Wick created for it, by killing all their enemies.

“You will do nothing, because you can do nothing.”

Out of desperation to save his son, Viggo sends men to kill John Wick in his home.  In this fight scene John Wick’s excellent fighting and killing skills are illustrated beautifully.  He kills twelve men efficiently and cruelly.

And then the real magic of the movie comes to the fore.

Wick makes a phone call for a “dinner reservation for twelve people”.

This is the code to call in a cleaning crew.  Led by Charlie, these men clean up the whole mess, removing the bodies, the weapons, bullet casings, cleaning up blood and other residue.  When they leave, the place is as spic-and-span as it was before the fight with no forensic evidence.

For this Charlie is paid twelve golden coins by John Wick.  These gold coins are another part of this strange world the movie is introducing us to.  The coins are an essential part of the world in which John Wick lives.  As we find out later, anything can be bought with it.

Then another part of this world is beautifully revealed.

His house is not safe anymore, so John Wick goes to a hotel.  This is a special hotel for assassins.  This one is the New York Continental.  It is managed by Ian McShane.  In the later movies we learn these hotels are all over the world.  In them we are introduced to the Rome Continental and the Morocco Continental.   One managed by Franco Nero, the other by Halle Berry.  How cool is that?

Inside the Continental the assassins are safe, as no “business” is allowed to be conducted inside the hotel.  Lance Reddick is the desk clerk.  He speaks with a strange accent, which makes the already cool Lance Reddick seem even cooler.  In John Wick Two we find out his name is Charon – you know, the ferryman who transports the dead over the river Styx.

“And as always…it is a PLEASURE having you with us again, Mister Wick.”

This is one of the coolest things in the movie.  Later on it seems that all the “service” people talk to John Wick as he is leaving them.  So far no explanation had been given for it, but I find it extremely cool.

Now, the deeper you go into the movie, the cooler the story becomes and the more you learn about this strange world of which John Wick is a resident.

Wick gets the information he needs about the whereabouts of Viggo’s son from the Continental’s hotel manager.  Wick goes to the nightclub where it was reported that Iosef is and a big fight breaks out there.  Once again it clearly illustrates the extreme fighting skills of John Wick, his commitment and his sheer will.  Iosef escapes, though, but at a great cost.  A lot of his father’s men get killed cruelly and efficiently by John Wick.

Back in the Continental, Wick is attacked by another assassin.  Even heavily wounded and tired he overpowers her in the intense fight they have.  He knocks her unconscious and ties her up.  He leaves her in the care of a fellow assassin.

Doing business on Continental grounds is an extremely serious offence.  You get excommunicated; which means none of the usual services are available to you and anyone can kill you.

Wick next goes to a church where Viggo’s money and other valuables are stored.  He burns it all.  This drives Viggo insane with rage and he takes it out on Marcus, the assassin he hired to kill Wick.  Marcus, who is Wick’s friend, is killed.

A lot of action follows and Wick finds out where they hide Iosef.  He kills all the men who were protecting Iosef and finally he shoots Iosef as he tries to run away from an enraged Wick.

“…it was just a fuck’n…” Iosef screams out before a bullet explodes through his skull.  Wick is a man of few words.

Viggo now wants to take revenge and in a huge action scene by the harbor Viggo and all his men are killed.  There’s a lot of very good action in this scene, from cars and SUV’s to fist fights, to gun fights.  But I didn’t really like this scene.  The actor who plays Viggo is Mikael Nyqvist.  He is one of my favorite actors.  It is obvious that Viggo has no chance against John Wick, so for me it was almost as if they humiliated the actor.  (Yes, I know it is not so, but still.)

Wick and Viggo fights in a strong downpour of heavy rain – at night.  You know, almost like in that other movie.

Perkins, the assassin who tried to kill John Wick in The Continental, is dramatically killed by the Hotel Manager and his men.  Then Charlie and cleaning crew appear as if out of nowhere to clean up.

The Continental gives John a new car, a 2011 Dodge Charger.  John finds a new dog when he breaks into a veterinarian surgery to get some medicine.

Everyone lives happily ever after, but only until John Wick Two…

John Wick is a great movie and definitely worth seeing.able{GfP

Climax

To say that Climax is a very good movie is really a gross understatement.  Climax is an excellent movie and a must-see for all film buffs.  Not only does it provide beautiful eye candy that connoisseurs of good movies will adore, it also tells a story on so many levels that you will soon lost count.

There’s a lot of (very good) dancing in Climax, but it is not a dance movie.

There’s lots of horror in Climax, but it is not a horror movie.

There’s a lot of sex (especially in the end) but it is not one of those movies.

It is all of that and much more. (If I may use that cliché)

The story is actually very simply.  A troupe of dancers is having their final practice in an old abandoned school out in the country.  This is before they go to the United States (the film plays off in France) to go and dance there.  Their plan is to have the final practice so that the organizers and the choreographer can makes sure there are no problems and sort it out if there are.  It is also to have a nice party after all the hard work they put in over the previous weeks.  All very nice and simple.

The movie starts out with someone crawling through the snow.  Then they show the video interviews they had with the dancers and the organizer, Emmanuelle.  These interviews are actually very important for what happens later on in the movie.  Take note; in the background of the interviews there is a shelf filled with books.  The titles of these books are all foreshadowing of what would later happen.

Then follows a very long scene of the most beautiful dancing this world had ever seen.  I don’t know if this is experimental dancing, because I have never seen dancing like that before.  It is very nice to watch and I like to watch it several times at a go.  It is wild, fascinating and done very well.  The actors in the movie are actually dancers in real life and not actors.  Sofia Boutella and Souheila Yacoub are the only “real” actors in the movie.

But the acting is superb and if I didn’t read up on the movie, I would never have guessed that these guys are amateur actors.

God is with us.

Says the choreographer into the microphone after that dance session.  (one of the Muslim dancers later claims that he didn’t like her saying that.)  After the dance session they are to party.  It had all been planned that way.  The tables are stacked with party snacks and the important Sangria, which is an integral part of the movie.

It is so ironic when Emmanuelle says: My only success in life is this Sangria.  Someone starts playing music from a boom-box to give DJ Daddy a chance to enjoy himself.  He is after all both the DJ and also a dancer.

It is then strange how the dancers break up into little groups of two, three or four.  There they chat in general and gossip about the others.  This “party/gossip” scene is long, but never boring.  You learn a lot about the dancers and it is also a creepy foreshadowing of what will happen later on in the movie.

Then there is another exquisite dance session.  This is complete free-style with a nice House beat. With this dance session, though, it is already clear that something is seriously wrong.

And then the trouble starts.  This is major trouble.

Someone had spiked the punch with an unknown drug.

What happens after that is one continuous horror show.  These scenes are both heartbreaking and fear inducing.  This movie illustrates clearly how it is more scary when an ordinary man or woman, who never did anything wrong in their lives before, turn into a monster.  It is way scarier than seeing a movie with real monsters.  People are just capable of so much more than what one would give them credit for.  Things that one cannot even imagine.

The two things that broke my heart was little Tito.  He is Emmanuelle’s four year old son whom she brought with to the practice session.  When the trouble starts, Emmanuelle still has enough sense left to lock him away from the others, most of whom had become worse than wild animals by that time.  But in her haste she locks him in the room where all the electrical control boxes are.  Remember, this is an abandoned building and things are not as they are supposed to be.  We should feel ourselves so lucky that the producers decided not to show what happens to Tito.  The thing is your imagination makes it worse.

Then there’s a scene where the others – who are by now completely out of their minds – urge Lou to cut the unborn baby out of her womb.  She already has the knife, she herself is hysterical and the scene is simply horrendous to watch.  Very good and believable acting by the beautiful Souheila Yacoub.

When the police arrive the next morning and the camera pans over the scene one just wants to cry and cry and cry.

Via the interviews at the beginning of the movie and the “gossip” during the party you came to know all of the characters and you even came to like some of them.  The panning of that camera shows very clearly that those still alive will never be the same ever again.

This is an excellent movie and how the producers came up with this idea only the spirits know.  It is unlike anything I saw before.  The camera angles are all weird and some scenes seem to go on for hours with no cuts.  The beginning of the movie is actually the ending with credits and everything.  In the middle of the movie, they suddenly show the start of the movie, with the title, real names of the actors and other things that are usually shown at the beginning of a film.  This throws you off a bit and adds to the total weirdness of the movie.

You find out that it is Lou crawling through the snow at the beginning (end) of the movie.  There is a trail of blood behind her, which adds to the total horror of the film.  Did she, or did she not?

I highly recommend this movie for ALL movie lovers.  Don’t skip or fast forward through the “horror” scenes, you are going to miss a lot.

Review: Follow Him by Craig Steward

Follow HimFollow Him by Craig Stewart
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Follow Him is a book written by Craig Stewart. This is a book of extreme horror and it should actually carry a very strict warning, because, really, where the horror is concerned this book doesn’t take any prisoners.
This book is about the rescue of Jacob Donohue from the farm of a cult called The Sacred Heart, by his former fiancée, Nina Todd. Everything seems clear cut at the beginning, with Nina’s quest as noble, and the cult as evil. But as she starts the deprogramming of Jacob things suddenly doesn’t look so clear cut anymore. Her “rescuing” of him starts to look more and more like a kidnapping. Joining the cult was something Jacob wanted to do and he was never forced into it.
Yes, but you were brainwashed, Nina tells him in reply to this. We find out that Nina did some research on how to “deprogram” someone who had been influenced by a cult. The question is will she succeed in this, because according to Jacob, she is actually the one who had been brainwashed and he (and the other cult members) is the one who had seen the light and knows the truth. This part is quite a few chapters long and the writer did a very good job with it. Later both the reader and Nina are not sure of her “quest” anymore.
Then, after being lulled into a sense of false security by these “deprogramming chapters”, the real horror comes to the fore. I was expecting evil monsters and demons coming out of the floor and the walls, but I can assure you it is much worse than that. Much, much worse.
This is the type of horror that gives you nightmares and can drive you insane, because this can happen for real. When you discover the horror for the first time (because it is there in front of you all the time, but you don’t see it until that crucial moment) it gives you the shudders. This is the exact type of horror that made me to stop reading Stephen King many years ago.
In your mind you (the reader) tell Nina to let it go. But because of the monsters in her own life she wants her fiancé back. This is more to proof a point than anything else. Although she means well, she lost my sympathy along the way. The reader quickly discovers that her life is not necessarily a clean slate. There is more dirt there than you would expect of your average person. Something which is not made clear at the beginning.
The last bunch of chapters is full out suspense all the way. I burn to tell you what happens, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. I can assure you that if you like mind tingling suspense and bloody horror in a continuous flood, this is the book for you.
The writer takes you deep into the mind and the background of the characters. And there are many more than Jacob and Nina. All of the characters have terrible skeletons in the closet, even the ones that would traditionally be seen as the good ones. In the end it seems that the only way of redemption – for all of them – is via The Harvest professed by “The First Beast”.
This book also illustrates very clearly how easily a person can be convinced by a cult. In the end the reader himself doesn’t know who is good or bad anymore. That which the cult professes actually starts to make sense and that is where the true horror lies, if you can read between the lines.
What I didn’t like of this book? That’s a hard one, but if you push me for an answer, I would say the ending. If I was the writer of this book, I would have made the ending slightly different.
This is a good horror book that will stay in the mind of the reader for a long time. A blessing is the book’s very short chapters. This makes the book easy and a pleasure to read. The story is also told via lots and lots of dialogue which makes it even more of a pleasure to read.
If you like a good horror story, which might stay in your mind for a long time, this is the book for you.
Highly recommended.

The Flat Earth and The Mandela Effect

The Mandela Effect and the Flat Earth
In the early twenty first century some people suddenly started noticing strange changes in the world all around them. It all started when the names of well-known products changed in very subtle ways. Here a letter, there an icon or even something as simple as a dash between words. When asked, the relevant companies would say it was always like that and they never changed their logos or anything like that. The companies would even produce advertisements of fifty, even a hundred years ago, which showed the logo or name never changed. The only place where the “other” name or icon existed, was in people’s minds. But these people were sure the name in their mind was the correct name and that this changed was sudden and unexpected.
And of course, inexplicable.
Another thing was that these uncanny changes increased at an accelerated pace. There were now strange things in the Bible. The Bible now had words and concepts that were never there before. Modern words and practices could now be read straight from the Bible. Sins that the “old” Bible unambiguously prohibited, were now encouraged and readers of the Bible were now told to at least try some of these sins and see what they think of it. Wine was kept in bottles and not wine sacks like people could remember. People were asking God to forgive their debts and not their trespasses. And the Lion didn’t lie with the Lamb anymore, now it was the Wolf that lay with the lamb.

Some people said it was there all the time, while others swore it wasn’t in the Bible before. But no matter which Bible they read, even Bibles printed in the eighteen-, even the seventeenth century, it still said the exact same thing.

And then the human body started changing. A lot of major organs were suddenly not where they always were. The strange thing was that even the anatomical charts changed, showing the organs in their “new” places. Many medical professionals pointed this out, whilst others claimed it was always like that and that no changes had taken place at all.

The human body was suddenly stronger and better, with sensitive organs protected in a much better and secure way against injury and even diseases. This didn’t prevent the strange diseases that would later come, but that had nothing to do with the location of the organs.

But even more exciting changes were still to come.
The main event was the discovery that the earth was flat and not a sphere. People have been claiming for many years that the earth was flat, but no one believed them. These people were called Flat-Earthers and the focus of many fine jokes. Now, with all these strange changes, there was suddenly lots of proof that the earth was actually flat like a pancake. That is proof that wasn’t there before.

After a lot of struggle and fighting with the United Nations, the flat earth people succeeded in sending an expedition to the South Pole.

Scientists claimed that the South Pole was at the bottom of the spherical earth; a place of everlasting snow and ice. The flat-earthers on the other hand, claimed this was not true. They said the South Pole was an ice wall of unknown dimensions that went right around the edge of the world to prevent the ocean from falling over the edge.
Visiting the South Pole was forbidden to ordinary people by the UN. Regular people never even knew about this regulation and even if they did, it wouldn’t have bothered them. Who wants to visit the South Pole?

But now the believers in the flat earth made this a moot point. This was propagated all over the Internet and in the media and people now wanted answers. Why does the UN have jurisdiction over the South Pole, whereas all countries proclaim it belonged to no one? Why can’t people explore the South Pole? With this, the already diminishing power of the UN was further eroded.

The first expedition to the South Pole didn’t survive. But the telexes they send, throughout their journey into the stormy cold darkness, told the others exactly what to expect. The second expedition, Project Kione, prepared very well for these now known dangers.

Going deep into the unknown lands of the South Pole there was incredible, almost impenetrable darkness. Fierce storms with winds so strong, it strips flesh from bone. Incredible cold, like no one had ever felt on earth before.

The first expedition couldn’t send any pictures back via their communication devices. But before they went off the air, they claimed to see a structure through the harsh wind in front of them.

“It looks like an enormous pyra…” And then the transmission was abruptly cut off.

Everyone who read it assumed they wanted to write pyramid. What else? So there is an enormous pyramid at the South Pole. What is that pyramid doing there? What or who was in that pyramid and was it that which killed the expedition members? Now there were even more questions than before.

And now that people thought about it, a pyramid is actually the ideal structure for a place with continuous snow. Pyramids are out of place in desert areas or rain forests. But it fits perfectly in a cold snowy environment.

The world was now openly taking sides against the UN and the richest people in the world financed Project Kione. The expedition had the best equipment, including four armored vehicles that could carry the whole expedition and all its equipment through the harshest weather. These vehicles could move on any terrain, through the thickest snow and even over and under water. So nothing was going to stop it. The last videos and photos show the mighty vehicles disappearing into the harsh darkness of a South Pole storm. Then the whole world waited with bated breath.

Reports from the expedition came through on an hourly basis. Whole radio and television stations were dedicated to Project Kione and people could listen and watch twenty four hours a day.
And then Project Kione reached the edge of the flat earth. They couldn’t fall off it like people always said would happen, because it was protected by a barrier. It was not a dome, like some said it was, it was something invisible, something that no one or nothing could pass through, no matter how hard they tried. It didn’t react to any instruments or probing. It was as if it wasn’t there, but there was no way to pass it.

And the pyramid was there. It was bigger and higher than any mountain of earth. The reports came through that it was built with blocks of giant stones, exactly like the famous pyramids in Giza. Iron-stone. Only thing, it was much bigger. And there were no entrances. The whole area was in complete darkness and it seems the sun never shines there. They had adequate lights, but with the continuous storms it was extremely difficult to make a good study of this strange pyramid.
Suddenly, after this very important discovery was made, the disease started. It started suddenly and right across the world. People got the disease and shortly afterwards they died. It was not the disease that was the problem, it was the death of the people that were a problem. The death of the people with the disease, made the most experience medical personnel run away screaming.

Melvin can’t remember if it was with the discovery that the earth was a flat plane and not a spherical planet, or the disease that caused it. But strange creatures now appeared everywhere on earth. These creatures were the monsters out of books and movies. People always said there were other dimensions that people visited during sleep and saw in their dreams. They said that was where those creatures, which appeared in the stories told over the centuries, came from. And now, it seemed, a dimensional portal had been opened and the real monsters now appeared on earth.

Nothing was as people took it to be through the centuries and things changed drastically. Dragons, werewolves, vampyres, goblins, dwarves, orcs, trolls, etc, all were now a normal part of the world. They were everywhere. Some of them terrorized inhabitants as described in the many stories that were written about them. Others, like the dragons, trolls, etc. were seldom seen. They stayed on their own in faraway places and didn’t interfere with humans at all. But others were a danger and it was almost like living in the bad part of a fairy tale.

The world had changed in an unexpected way.

The Return of the Myths

It all started out very gradually. So gradually that it was almost non-existent. It started out with small things and ninety nine percent of people never noticed it. The one percent who noticed the strange happenings, was not taken seriously by the main stream, because it was the usual conspiracy theorists and spiritual teachers. Spiritual matters were not important to people in the old world. It was more a rush to make as much money as possible to buy as many gadgets as possible. As long as their gadgets worked, people were happy and nothing else was important.
But the changes were there, and clear for anyone who actually cared to look.

At first well known stories and names changed. Not in a big way, but in a small, almost unnoticeable way. The very well-known television series, Sex In The City, now changed into Sex And the City. The famous movie; Interview With A Vampire, now became Interview With The Vampire. The strange thing was that when something changed there was nothing you could fall back on. There was no proof of what you believe to be the old name. Even an old VHS cassette that you have sealed in a box, on the loft seldom used, would still show the “new” name, Interview with THE Vampire, and not, Interview with A vampire, like you remembered it.

The experts had a field day with this and said it were false memories. This led to fierce debates on Internet forums, making people ready to fight to prove their point.

And then – still very gradually – other, bigger, more important things started to change. The location of countries on the maps of the world changed. Some countries became bigger, others smaller. And then new countries – which were never there before – started appearing. Once again, for most people those countries were always there, there was nothing to debate about. But the one percent was totally flabbergasted and had no explanation for this. This was way beyond magic, way beyond any conspiracy they could think of.

The spiritual people claimed that dimensions were converging. They said the speed of time and space were increasing. They further claimed that the earth was split up into several pieces by a very strong bomb in ancient times. Some of those pieces disappeared into other dimensions, due to the unprecedented power of the bomb, but were always there, with its inhabitants continuing to develop like normal, as if they were living in the regular world. Now, with the vibration becoming faster, the different parts of earth were converging, healing and becoming one again. Exactly like the holy books predicted.

The majority of people scoffed at this. Wasn’t it proven time and again that all the holy books were just a bunch of crap written by unscientific men of old?

And then the human body changed. Organs now moved to different positions in the human body. Some organs became smaller, while others became larger and more powerful. With their bigger, stronger hearts and bigger lungs people could now run faster and do more work. The human body became better and was not so disease prone anymore. People were healthier. Sugary and other junk foods went the way of the dodo, as people were not interested in it anymore. Their tastes changed and the usual junk food wasn’t to their liking.

And then the world became really strange. First the creatures out of literature appeared in the world. These were the beings that were never considered to be real. Fairies, brownies, pixies – all the little people of fairy tales and more appeared everywhere on the planet. Then the short, but robust dwarves appeared, then centaurs and even flaming satyrs. And they all had in common the fact that they seemed to have been here all the time.

When people looked again, all the monsters and other creatures from legends and tales of old were there. Nymphs, satyrs, banshees, Cerebus, goblins, etc, etc. They were now all here and moving around on the planet in their different habitats, as if they were here all the time.

It all happened suddenly and no one could deny it. One day they were not there, the next day they were there as if they were there all the time.

People now blamed a scientific experiment that was being conducted in Switzerland for all of this. They said the triple six had opened a portal to hell. Other simply said it was a portal to other dimensions. Some spiritualists said this was something humans should never have interfered with, whilst other said, no, it was supposed to happen that way.

They said everything on earth moved in cycles. It starts with utter destruction of the planet, with only a few humans surviving here and there. These humans restart everything and slowly but surely, over tens of thousands of years, a civil society is created. This new society usually knows nothing of the societies that came before it. Anyone who claims there were highly advanced societies in ancient times is made off as crazy and a conspiracy theorist.

Humans become more advance and with this they built more powerful weapons and stronger means of destruction. And in the end they use those weapons, which lead to the utter destruction of the planet, which starts the cycle all over again.

People said the return of these mythical creatures where the sign that destruction was at hand.
In a remote part of the Atlantic Ocean, a giant country appeared overnight. People immediately said it was Atlantis that rose up from the ocean depths. But this was a very advanced land with a sophisticated people who claimed to have been there all the time. Their native tongue almost sounded like a combination of Dutch and German, and even contained many Dutch and German words. Even stranger was the fact that most of the residents of this new country used ordinary English as a second language. In fact many people of this mysterious land could speak the other languages of the world.

They couldn’t understand what people were talking about as they claim to have been there all the time and said they had been dealing with everybody in the world since time immemorial. They had the photos and videos that proved this without qualification.

They called their country Thula.

People got a shock when they heard this.

But with the appearance of this strange land in the Atlantic Ocean, the disease started. There was simply no explanation for it. People’s skin started changing color. Today it would be bright pink, tomorrow blue and by next week a strange green tint. There was no explanation for it and no cure. Even the people of Thula got this disease and even they said they couldn’t understand it and that it was the first time they contracted something like it or even heard of it.

Their scientists and the scientists of the “old” world studied this disease with everything they had, but they couldn’t make head or tail of it.

People with the disease didn’t live long after they’ve contracted the disease.

Something strange happened when they died. Something so horrible that most people didn’t even want to think about it, much less talk about it.

Melvin saw his mother, father and brother split open from the top of their heads, right down to their crotch. Something came out and ran away with an amazing speed, leaving what seemed like empty shells behind. Inside the split open body there were no organs, no blood, nothing. Just like the empty shell of a peanut.

No explanation. Nothing. No matter how much the scientists studied it, they couldn’t find out what it was.

But things were really happening at an accelerated pace now. Nobody could deny it anymore. The world was not the same as it was before. Nobody scoffed now. Everybody was scared out of their wits. Nobody knew what was going to change next and the disease was taking a great toll. People who waited on their gods to safe them, died inside their holy places as they prayed to the gods. There was no answer.

Another shock was that the earth was flat after all. The few people who believed in the flat earth was always mocked and ridiculed by those who definitely knew the earth was round. And then it was proven that the earth was flat and all those government scientists did lie all this time. But there was no time to go deeper into that now. This was simply not important anymore, not in relation to everything else that was happening.

Some power stations stopped functioning. Other power stations disappeared overnight. Some disappeared into sink holes, while others simply disappeared as if they never existed. With no electricity, all gadgets and equipment stopped functioning almost immediately. The lack of electricity was basically the only thing that could bring the whole Internet down and this is what happened. No Internet overnight. With no Internet, everything in the then modern world came to a standstill.

Worldwide communication ceased overnight. Everything was local now. People were now forced to listen to the prepper community who always said something like this might happen. Okay, the truth is nobody expected it to be like this, but those who prepared for a disaster, were ready.

Nations were now way too weak to even think of making war with one another, with their populations dying at a sped up rate and their great weapons of war not working anymore. People turned back to the old weapons; bow and arrow, spears, clubs, knives, etc.

And this is the world that Melvin finds himself in now. Luckily it all started when he was still a child, so he is basically used to it and for him living like this is actually a way of life.

To Live or Perish

TO LIVE OR PERISH is the story of two powerful and highly principled men.  The one has been prophesied to return the glory of Shaka to the land, the other is there to bring freedom to his oppressed people and move them into their own fatherland.

On an early winter morning, a man and his young son are assassinated right in front of the son’s school.  Crime had become such a normal part of life in New Zuidland that this terrible murder hardly even makes it into the newspapers.  But this killing starts a series of events that will change everybody’s lives in a profound way.

Things have not been going well in New Zuidland, which for the past thirty two years have been under the governance of the African Resistance Movement.  People say the ARM had been mis-governing the country since it was simply handed over to them by the previous government.  The African Resistance Movement got their fame due to the fact that they fought against the notorious Separation of Nations political system that was implemented by the old White government.

The problem is that as soon as they were in control of the riches of New Zuidland, they immediately re-established this system and started oppressing the White part of the population with a vengeance.  Not only was ARM discriminating against a part of its population, it was also corrupt and looted the state coffers like there was no tomorrow to worry about.  People in New Zuidland became poor, unemployed, with no land and no prospect that things would get better.

And this is where these two men suddenly burst onto the stage in New Zuidland.  The one wants to return the glory of the great Shaka to the New Zuidland and then to Africa.  The other one wants to bring the Whites out of the misery of New Zuidland and into their own fatherland.

Both men are powerful and highly principled.

Both men had been prophesied for certain greatness.

Both have the backing of powerful divinities.

Both are strong and champion fighters.

The fight for New Zuidland is on and things are going to get hot.  The stage is set for an explosive confrontation like the world had never seen before.

The Mandela Effect?

Two years ago I discovered the Mandela Effect.  This is a very interesting subject and I read a lot about it.

For those who don’t know what the Mandela Effect is; it comes from the fact that many people remembered Mandela having died in prison in the eighties.  People remember the news stories about it and even the funeral.  Even George Bush said: Mandela is dead, in a speech.  Afterwards people were surprised to find out that Mandela was very much alive and only died in 2013.

And then people started noticing a lot of other things that were off.  The Berenstein Bears, Jiffy Peanut Butter, the Volkswagen logo, etc etc.  You can read all about it here.

So, in any case, I read up a lot about the Mandela Effect.  Some of the names I didn’t know from the start, about others I really wasn’t sure of.  Then there were things I was sure about; like for example I know the TV show was Sex IN the City and never Sex AND the City.

Also the Volkswagen logo.  I noticed when it changed, but I thought it was just a usual thing as companies are known for sometimes changing and modernizing their logos – why not.  But when I was a kid in the seventies, the Volkswagen logo had no indention between the V and the W.

But, as the changing of names and symbols were not THAT important to me, I simply lost interest.

And then last year, my automatic spell check started underlining the word DWARVES every time I typed it.  I ignored it and left the word as DWARVES, because I know that is how you spell it.  I didn’t take much notice of it, because I use the America dictionary as my default and sometimes the words are spelled slightly differently from my native South African English.

Then one day, I had some extra time and I decide to check it up in the dictionary itself.  I use Wordweb.

Wordweb did not recognize the word DWARVES and immediately suggested DWARFS, the same like the Word- and Scrivener dictionaries did.

What the hell?

I then check in The Sage English Dictionary and Thesaurus.  The same. Only DWARFS and nothing else.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

We learned to spell the plural of dwarf in grade four, many-many years ago.  Some words you only had to ad an S after the last letter to make it plural.  Other words were more complicated and the last letter had to be changed by VES.

Half – Halves,

Dwarf – Dwarves.

I remember that lesson very well and I spelled DWARVES like this for all these years without any problem.

Then I checked on the various dictionary sites on the Internet.  All of them had only the one spelling DWARFS.

At the moment I am very disappointed that I didn’t take any screen shots, although I don’t think that would have helped.

At that time I didn’t think of the Mandela effect at all and just went on, deciding that maybe a decision was taken somewhere that it would be spelled DWARFS from now on.  I checked in other stories, even Lord of the Rings, and there it was Dwarfs.  Who am I to argue with Tolkein, professor in English Literature.

I am not a very difficult person and I let it go.

Then the magic happened.

This morning I had to use the word again and out of habit I typed it DWARVES.  This time it was NOT underlined as a spelling mistake.  That immediately caught my attention.  I typed it again, still the same.

Then I checked Wordweb.  Now it shows that both DWARFS and DWARVES are correct.  I went to The Sage – the same.  As were all the dictionary websites.  Both DWARFS and DWARVES are correct.

I don’t know what is going on here.  I don’t use my physical dictionaries anymore, as the electronic dictionaries are much easier.  My English dictionaries are packed very deep and I didn’t take them out to check, but I should have.  Now it’s too late.

I don’t know if this is because of the Mandela Effect or what is going on here, but what I can say is this; there is definitely something going on here.

IF I am in a computer stimulation – like the SIMS or anything like that – then I would ask the user to please make me a rich man.

IF some higher power is changing the dimensions, then please put me on a small planet where there’s lots of white sand, sea, cats and dogs.  No people.

Thank you.

Lovecraft and The Shadow over Innsmouth

HP Lovecraft was a great writer of horror. I should actually say IS, because we all know authors of horror stories never really die, they just find residency in one of their own stories.

Lovecraft’s most famous and scariest story for me is The Shadow over Innsmouth. All Lovecraft stories are excellent, but this one counts as one of my favorites.

Like the master writer he was, Lovecraft starts the story at the end. When you read the story you already know that the narrator makes it out alive and gets the cops, the FBI and the Army who then come and destroy and blow up mostly all that is evil in Innsmouth, namely the fish-men and the rest of their brood. And of course the evil underneath Devil’s Reef.

You know that for a fact, because it is stated right at the beginning of the story in very clear terms. Despite the fact that you know the narrator makes it out alive and unscathed you are still frightened out of your mind while the narrator is inside the seaside town.

In comes in the way of how Lovecraft – almost lovingly – describes the absolute filthiness of the place, the boarded up windows, the completely desolated houses with the strange guttural noises coming from behind the boards. And the wind swept streets with no cats or dogs to be seen anywhere. The salty, musty smell hovering over the place. And the creepy priest he sees inside the dark interior of the church as he arrives in town with the bus. All of this puts the fear of Cthulhu inside of you.

You scream out at the narrator: For fuck’s sake! Fuck your interest in artifacts, old books and furniture, get the hell out of that place. You are intelligent, can’t see this is not going to end up well for you?

All the signs are there:

There is the evil looking bus driver. The strange people inside Innsmouth, with the staring eyes and the strange coloration and what seems like scales on their skin. And the many warnings he get, including the screaming of the drunkard who tells him the story of how Captain Obed Marsch who brought prosperity to Innsmouth. What was the price of that prosperity?

And then of course, late afternoon – just as he is about to leave this obviously very evil place – the bus breaks down. Exactly like everyone expected would happen.

Now, at this point, if I was this narrator, I would have walked out of that town. By now he saw for himself how evil the place was, many people warned him and he knows of the disappearances of strangers to the town. But not our hero – oh no. He gets a room in the creepy and “moth-eaten” hotel for one dollar and then he goes to have some supper at the filthy and creepy looking restaurant across the street.

As the sun sets, he goes back to his hotel room. Inside he notices that the inside bolt of his room door had recently been removed. There is no key to lock the door. He decides not to sleep that night and just lie on his bed with his clothes on.

And then Lovecraft constructs one of the scariest, most nerve racking scenes ever in horror story history.

The escape from the room.
Remember, the reader already knows that the narrator makes it out of Innsmouth unscathed and goes to call the police and the FBI, but that doesn’t take away one iota of the horror when the fishmen come for him that night.

This scary scene is perfectly recreated in The Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth. This game is not easy to play In this level the player has to open a door, go into another room and bolt the door behind him. Then he has to rush to close the other door to the passage and bolt it. Then he can open the door to the other room and enter that room, close the door to the passage in that room, open a door to another room, close the outside door and move the cupboard against it so that the fishmen can’t break in.

None of this is easy, as you have to work fast and some of the things, like the heavy cupboard gets stuck as you push it. All the time the people are shooting and trying to break down the door with an axe. In addition to all this your character has no weapon.

If you have succeeded in doing all of that, your character have to climb out by the window and inch his way to safety. He can’t look down as the fear might make him to hallucinate and then he will fall to his death in any case, having to play the whole level from scratch again.

This part of the game is almost the same as the story. Mind blowing and nerve racking to the extreme. And all this despite the fact that you know for a fact that the narrator makes it safely out of Innsmouth.

That is truly the mark of a great writer.
But in any case, the purpose of this article was not to tell the story or praise HP Lovecraft. There is much more to the story than what I wrote here. I hope I didn’t spoil anything for you, but then the story was written in 1931, so…

In any case the purpose of this article was to speculate.

What if, in the game, the character had the weapons of Farcry 2, for example. A M249 machine gun, with a M79 grenade launcher. The fishmen would then stand no chance as they only have their evilness, a few batons and one shotgun. With his Farcry 2 weapons your character would be able to shoot the evil brood to ribbons. Then, with the M79 grenade launcher he could shoot the hotel up to kingdom come and burn the whole rotten and desolated neighborhood down with a cleansing fire. In fact he alone could kill all the fishmen and their brood right there in Innsmouth without the help of the FBI or the army.

Yes, yes and yes, I know it will take the effect of putting raw fear into the player away, but I would still like to do it. To kills these arrogant, unafraid fishmen and shoot them back into the dark abyss where they come from.

Or what if the Terminator spend the night there in that dangerous hotel room. Oh, that would be glorious. To see the indestructible Terminiator tearing that evil brood of Dagon apart with his bare hands and saying in a harsch Austrian accent; “Zu are terminated.”
The thing is that the protagonists in Lovecraft stories never end up all happy forever at the end of his stories. I can’t remember a story that ended up well for the protagonist. In the Shadow over Innsmouth, the reader will have to decide for himself if it is good or not.

I – for one – liked the ending of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. More than I liked the other endings of Lovecraft stories. Only thing is I would have enjoyed reading about him saving his cousin out of Arkham Asylum.

Read Lovecraft, you will LOVE it.

Brenda Fassie: Super-star from the Cape Flats

“I’m going to become the Pope next year.  Nothing is impossible.” These were the words of Brenda Fassie in 2001 after winning numerous musical awards for her work.

Nokuzola Brenda Fassie, one of the world’s greatest musicians was born right here, on the Cape Flats.  Her life and career is one continuous effort of bravery and purpose that helped to shape our nation and changed our history forever.  And off course, the music.  The music was what Ma Brrr – as everyone called her – was all about.

THE BEGINNING

Brenda was born in Langa, a township on the Cape Flats.  Her father died when she was still very young and she was brought up by her mother.  Her mother was a pianist, which means Brenda was baptised into music at a very early age.  Her mother gave her the English name, Brenda, after the American Country singer, Brenda Lee.

Being born into music, meant that Brenda already had her own little music group by the age of four.  They were called Brenda and the Tiny Tots.  They sang for the tourists who came to visit the townships in those years and thus earned some money for their households.  Brenda just kept on singing and became famous on the Cape Flats for her powerful singing voice.  Her professional career really started, though, when top South African producer, Koloi Lebona came to visit Langa, on the Cape Flats, especially to hear Brenda sing.  He was very impressed and said Brenda had: ‘The Voice of the Future’.  Brenda insisted on returning to Johannesburg with him to make a name for herself.

She was only 16 years old at the time and the whole idea was that she would finish her schooling in Soweto, while at the same time following her calling as a singer.  The ball was on the roll now and Brenda was in for the time of her life.

POWERFUL VOICE

Brenda had a natural powerful singing voice.  Once you start listening to a song sung by Brenda, you can’t help but listen to the end of the song.  It can be describe in two words: pure magic.  No one can doubt that she was put on this earth to sing.  Her voice further had the ability to adapt itself, in no time, to the dance beats of the moment.  She had a way of making a song stick in your mind. Remember that song you just can’t get out of your head; chances are good it was one by Brenda Fassie.  She simply had that magic.

In Soweto Brenda started her national career when she stood in for one of the members of super-group, Joy.  She immediately drew the attention of other people who would help her go forward in her career.  She appeared with famous Blondie and Papa on their roadshow through the country.  On the roadshow, Brenda would appear with a band called The Big Dudes.  After the roadshow, they joined and became Brenda and The Big Dudes.  From here onwards it was only success for Ma Brrr.

WEEKEND SPECIAL

Brenda and The Big Dudes immediately drew national accolades with their 1983 disco hit: Weekend Special.

You could hear this song on the radio every day.  It was playing in all the nightclubs and at every house party all over the Cape Flats.  But not only locally; it became famous all over the world and it let to Brenda and The Big Dudes touring the USA, Britain, Europe, Australia and Brazil.  Many cover versions of Weekend Special was made and one such cover version spent eight weeks on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Black Single charts in 1986.

Weekend Special is Cape Flats slang for a girl who has a relationship with a married man.  He only has time for her on weekends, which makes her his Weekend Special.  This slang term became used worldwide now.

CHICO

Brenda broke away from The Big Dudes and established herself as a solo pop star when she started working with musical genius and producer, Sello ‘Chico’ Twala.  This was an excellent decision.  They produced an album called Too Late For Mama. The hit single on this album was Black President.  It was almost immediately banned by the South African Government.  This, off course, made that everyone wanted it and increased the popularity of Fassie incrementally.

In 1997 Fassie and Twala produced the album, Memeza.  It became South Africa’s top selling album for 1998.  The magical song Vul’indela (meaning: accept your situation) was used in the ANC election campaign.  She even sang it life at the inauguration of South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

Fassie was on a roll now and for four years in a row, Fassie took the South African Music Awards prize for Best Selling Album of the year.  She further won the Kora Award for Best Female Artist twice.

Brenda’s international reputation only got better and better and Time Magazine even went so far as to call her “The Madonna of the Townships”.

BE LIKE BRENDA

Brenda Fassie is another individual from the Cape Flats that is a good example to each and every one, by way of her musical career.  She started out with basically nothing and no special privileges, but went out and made a name for herself on the international stage.  Everybody loves her and she will forever be remembered for the good music that she made, which we can still listen to, even today.

Brenda had her faults, but only a person without any faults will be allowed to bad mouth her on the Cape Flats.  Otherwise forever hold your peace.

The bubblegum-disco hit that exploded all over our radios in 1983 – Weekend Special.  The heart-breaking sweet sound of Black President.  The hauntingly beautiful tune, with that loud clear voice of Ma Brrr, in Nomakhanjani.  And the irresistible beat of Vul’indela that automatically makes your feet start to dance.  All thanks to the magic which was Brenda Fassie.

She died in 2004 and was buried in her home town of Langa on the Cape Flats.  Wheresoever she currently is, I’m sure she’s busy singing…

Hulk vs Thanos

As a life long reader of The Incredible Hulk, I must say that I don’t believe Thanos can beat down The Hulk within two seconds.

Not The Hulk I know.

It does not matter how strong Thanos is, or what help he has, the more you beat down on The Hulk, the angrier he gets.  The angrier he gets, the stronger he gets.

I don’t know if it had been tested, but I believe The Hulk’s strength is limitless.  The Hulk would have beaten Thanos and his children within an inch of their lives.

The director either doesn’t know anything about The Hulk or it’s a blind for something that will come later in the movie.  I don’t know.

It is also true that the director couldn’t have The Hulk beat Thanos and his evil minions into a pulp, because then we wouldn’t have a movie.

Because of Thanos own incredible strength and determination, The Hulk would have had to kill him or beat him so badly that he wouldn’t have felt like killing half the universe afterwards.

Thus; no movie…

I can understand that and really have no problem with it.

A writer sometimes has to do strange things to make his story mo

saintofkillers

ve forward.

I feel that the only one that can really match The Hulk on any level is The Saint of Killers.  I wouldn’t want to be the writer who write such a story, though.

A fight between The Hulk and The Saint of Killers would last until the end of time and probably beyond, with zero conclusion.

“Nuff said…
